adding an ethernet card

Hi all, I feel a little guilty as I have asked this question on a
netfilter mailing list, but I have been told that the question does not
apply to that mailing list. So here I am.
I have got ipfilter and Wolverine working on my Linux box. Now I would
like to have that same box operate as a gateway to another box.
But, my internet connection fails everytime I restart the computer with
the new ethernet card in the computer. The computer detects the new
ethernet card and I configure it accordingly (see
http://www.apeldoorn.hccnet.nl/howto/mini/Home-Network-mini-HOWTO.html#s1)
Although the web page I put in brackets if for Linux 6.*, I couldn't
find an updated version, so I assumed it was still applicable. Part
of the process requires that I configure the eth1 ethernet card to
have this ip address:
192.168.1.1
Anyway, the weird thing is that this problem is highly reproduceable (i.e.
consistent), so I think this must be a common problem. If I take out the
extra ethernet card, the system works fine (my connection to the internet
is restored). But as soon as I add it, the system can't connect to the
internet.
In addition to creating the additional config file as listed on the above
web page. I also changed the contents of /etc/sysconfig/network
from
GATEWAYDEV=eth1
to
GATEWAYDEV=eth0
But that didn't effect any change. Also I tried looking in my
/etc/modules.conf
and this is what I find whether I have the other ethernet card installed
or not:
alias eth0 rt18139
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias eth0 8139too
It seems strange that two device drivers (I believe that is what those two
entries are for) are being aliased to the single ethernet device.
Also, I don't know if this is interesting or not, but my lo settings are
obviously good as I am able to ping my own IP address and get a response.
Thanks for any input,
Tim Cassidy
PS Sorry for the cross post
