The cable for the CD-ROM is not an IDE cable. Different number of pins.

This is what I would have done, but someone got to the computer before me and
formatted the drive. The driver (the part in config.sys) is missing and there
are no backup diskettes. All they installed was a partial DOS 6.1 OS. In
other words, I have no access to the CD-ROM from DOS.
