Upgrade to Glibc-2.2.4 doesn't work

I had Red Hat 7.1+ with Kernel 2.4.13 and I tried to upgrade to
Glibc-2.2.4-19.  The Upgrade was OK but I could no longer login at the
console.

I enter the user name hit return and the user name disappears.

I presume that there is something specific that I need to install or
something specific that I need in the Kernel.

I have now mostly upgraded to 7.2 but the problem persists.
