Compaq Woes

Hello!

Sorry for how long it took me to respond to the responses. I have a couple of
questions, as I continue to work at setting up my system with Linux (rh 7.0).

First, it was suggested that I use the Savage driver for my video card. Does
this driver come with the distribution included in the Red Hat Linux Bible? Or
will I need to download it from elsewhere?

Also, for some reason, I cannot install LILO into the hda boot sector of my
hard drive. So, I've resorted to using a "boot disk." The only problem with
this approach is that it takes about 5 minutes to get to "uncompressing the
kernel." I've noticed that there is also a LILO setup in the /boot directory of
my Linux partition (hda3). This directory also includes vmlinux-2.2.16-22.
Now then, running on the probably wrong assumption that it is reading and
uncompressing vmlinux-2.2.16-22 that is taking so long on the boot disk, is
there any way I can direct LILO to uncompress the one in my Linux partition?
I've tried adjusting the setting in the lilo.conf file on the boot disk, but these
adjustments didn't seem to make a difference.

Finally, for the fellow that is a fan of Linux-Mandrake. I also attempted to
install Linux-Mandrake 8.0 onto my system. It seemed to work fine until X
Window was started, at which time the screen went blank and the machine
hung up. Upon reboot, I found that the file system was trashed beyond
repair. I'm not trying to favor Red Hat over Mandrake, because quite
honestly, I don't have the knowledge to come to such a decision. Just
thought that you would like to know what happened during my attempt, and
perhaps answer a question of "why" that happened. (Please do so, if you
want, privately. After all, this *is* a Red Hat mailing list. :-) )

Thanks for all of your help, and God Save the Penguins!
