That would seem like a reasonable try at trouble shooting the problem.
I don't know a lot about networks, but one thing is certain, if you are
using an alias for your system, somehow something is going to need to
know what it is and I don't think that anything looks at the "HOSTNAME"
file except the rc scripts.
