Actually, you should use ">/dev/null 2>&1" (which also redirects stderr to /dev/null).
"should" may be a little strong here. I don't want noise in my mailbox, but if stderr from a cron job is generating such noise, then it's likely something is misconfigured somewhere. IMHO, YMMV, etc.
