Tape drive problem

I have connected an external SCSI DAT tape drive to the redhat7.1 server.

I have tried the solution provided in another thread but it doesn't look good.

I have tried $tar czvf /dev/st0 [src] and it seems like working.

But when I run the commend $cat /dev/st0 will result an "Input/output error".

How can I know the tape drive is porperly installed?
How to backup data to the tape and how to restore?
Can I check what content is in the backup tape?
