ldap authentication for network.

Hello,
	I'm trying to implement network wide authentication. I don't want to use
nis because it sends plain text. I thought about ldap authentication. My
goal is to have a redhat box do ldap authenticating for itself, and
interface with say a fbsd 4.4 box and a win2k box. Has anyone set up
anything similar to this?
