Subject: Linux doesn't reboot

Hello, guys,
I apologize in advance for my questions as I'm very new to Linux. I
have
been studying it for some month and a half.
I run Windows 98 (Second Edition) and Linux on my PC at home.
>From the very beginning I have a problem of Linux being unable to
>reboot
following the command shutdown -r now or to shutdown following the
command shutdown -h now. Linux announces finishing a suite of the
processes and power down off but, finally, neither reboot nor
shutdown. I
detected this performance on three recent versions: Red Hat 7.1 (Sea
Wolf), Red Hat 7.2 (Enigma) and Mandrake-8.
The older version Red Hat 6.0 (Hedwig) is able to reboot, at least.
Unfortunately, it doesn't have the sound card and network card
drivers
compatible with my CMI8738 sound card and SiS900 network card. I
downloaded the sound card driver for my CMI8738 sound card, extracted
the
tar file by tar xvzf cmpci*tar.gz in the
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound directory, changed a directory to
/usr/src/linux, but couldn't configure cm8738 driver by 'make
menuconfig'
as I couldn't find this driver there.
On the other side, I don't know how to enable Linux with the shutdown
feature in the recent versions.
My questions are the following: what do I do to complete
configuration of
the sound card driver in Red Hat 6.0?
What do I do to enable Linux to reboot, at least, or to reboot and to
shutdown according to the shutdown command in the Linux' most recent
versions?
My PC is Cyrix instead, MMX-333, BIOS is AMI-BIOS version 07.02 of
07/15/95, chipset M571.
Thank you, guys, for reading me. All your suggestions to resolve my
problems would be greatly appreciated.
Valery Brodskiy.
