I was really hoping someone with better knowledge would respond to this
first, so here goes. How are the drives recognized? As ide drives, hda,
hdb, and so forth? If so then the HPT370 is not being recognized as a raid
driver. Best is to visit the Highpoint website,
http://www.highpoint-tech.com as they now have a driver, module and
installation instructions for use with RH 7.1. In short the raid drive must
be recognized as a SCSI drive, probably sda. If your HPT370 chip is an
on-board chip the site will tell you to visit your motherboard manufacturer
for the proper files. The Iwill motherboard site, the only one I've been to,
simply copies the Highpoint files, but this may not be so for all MBs.
Short steps: download files: bios, modules, boot files
unpack all files. Make boot disk from boot image file, modules disk from
modules files
Reboot to pure DOS environment (not Windows), use load.exe to update HPT
bios to RH bios, if needed (probably will be)
Reboot to HPT370 Redhat boot disk, follow directions in installation file.
Ultimately this will copy an initrd file that loads the HPT370 module to get
the system to see your ide drives as one scsi drive, then will load a 7.1
kernel modified to remove HPT370 support and use the supplied module.
I realize I have ignored your request to direct this to RH 7.2. As of last
night Highpoint does not have a module or modified kernel for RH 7.2, (nor
SuSE 7.2 or 7.3) for that matter. A phone call to their tech support says
they are working on it, but I gather it is not the highest priority.
I have played a little with compiling my own kernel, following directions in
Highpoint "manual" but have been spectacularly unsuccessful so far. Their
instructions relate specifically to the releases (RH 7.1, Suse 7.1, Caldera)
they have modified files for, and may not generalize. Not having suffered
enough I will probably continue attempts here. Hope this helps at least a
little. Richard
