Method to stop console video blanking

My turn to ask a question for once:

Does anyone know the mechanism to stop the console from blanking
the video?  Not the X screensaver (that's easy), I mean the one that
controls the virtual consoles.  I know it seems weird, but we're
chasing a subtle bug and can't put a serial console on the beast.

According to console_codes, I think sending an "ESC[9;0]" (ESC=0x1b)
does it but I'm not certain.  Any suggestions are highly welcomed.
