Everything as below. The only meaningful difference is that I use "valid
users = @users".
While we don't have the O'Reilly book, we do have the
Brooksbank/Haberberger/Doyle Samba Administrator's Handbook and all the man
pages printed off.
This is particularly frustrating since I previously installed set up an old
e-smith server that works like a charm. It worked so well we decided to get
with the big dogs and install RH73 on another box. Life hasn't been the same
since.

Let's see here. Ok, the windows user name AND the linux user name
MUST
be the same, including upper/lower case (unless you turn on the
munging
feature of Samba). The windows user and password MUST ALSO be in the
Samba password file, /etc/samba/smbpasswd (entered by using the
"smbpasswd" program). You must also set the appropriate
authentication
method in smb.conf ("security = user" unless you want to go through
the
NT domain mechanism).
If you wish to browse the Linux box from Windows, they must be in the
same workgroup AND you must have "browseable" items in the smb.conf
file, e.g.:
[Storage]
comment = Place to store Windows data
path = /usr/local/win-storage
valid users = rick
public = no
writable = yes
printable = no
browseable = yes
I also HIGHLY recommend you get a copy of "Using Samba" from
O'Reilly.
