Thanks for the reply, however I have tried this to no avial. Let me explain what I have done.
smbadduser unixid:ntid
where unixid = guest
and ntid = dbuckingham
When prompted for a password i have hit enter twice so as not to set one (it indicates that this has been accepted by prompting passwrd changed).
If i then try to once again add a folder to this shared directory from the windows box i still get an access denied.
Will doing all this as root in linux cause an issue?
if i have created a user in linix as dbuckingham also, will this cause an issue?

You forgot the important part of using smbadduser. The syntax for the
smbadduser command will be given if you just type smbadduser by itself...
