Long ago I had the same type of problem trying to install OS/2. I can't
remember the details now, but the fix involved changing the bios - the LBA
addressing or a read ahead cache, or something - and it then worked perfectly.
Sorry I can't remember the specific details, but whatever it was, it was
something that had not been a problem on the system before. I was able to
restore the setting after the installation with no problems. I realize this
ain't real helpful, but the general idea is to try untweaking your system a
little...
