Re: RH 8.0 install problems

Jim Hayward

I've never used or seen Linux. I'm wanting to learn how to use it. This is my first experirnce with it. I bought the Red Hat 8 Bible Book and it says the boot program is on one of the CD's included with the book. I have a current Windows XP/Home OS on my computer. I recently reformatted the 80G HD into 2 partitions. Windows in on the C:/ partition(40G). I made a D:/ partition that is completely unused at present(40G). I do not have a current bootloader that I'm aware of. Do I need to install one first? Like I said before, The book I bought said there was one on the CD's. I inserted the Cd, rebooted my system, it said anaconda installer was loading, I then tried to install graphical option, got a message saying, monitor: unable to probe, then the screen went blank. So I  rebooted again and then tried the text option  and it worked fine untill I got to the partition part and then I couldn't understand how to do it. The book explains some of it, but I still can't figure it out. Do you have an Instant messenger username so I might chat with you?

lilo is not included with Red Hat 8.0. When you upgraded did it present
you with the option to use your current bootloader or update to grub?

If you chose to use grub, it might not have installed correctly.
Boot using your boot disk or using rescue mode and try reinstalling
grub. You might want to take a look at /etc/grub.conf first.

I assume you had the bootloader installed in the mbr of hda.
You can install grub with: grub-install /dev/hda

If you chose to keep lilo. Check you /etc/lilo.conf and see if it is
correct. Then reinstall lilo with: lilo -v

See if that cures your problem.

In addition the system hangs at the BLUE Curve screen after it hits
the mouse icon,

Wrong mouse driver installed after the upgrade maybe. Might try running
mouseconfig.
