Are you installing from the source tarball?  If so, it is the usual:

 cd <desired build location>
 tar xzvf <path_to>/clamav-0.51.tar.gz
 cd clamav-*
 ./configure
 make
 su -
 cd <wherever>/clamav-*
 make install

What messages are you getting when you don't succeed?
