     I have never use scsi cd-rom installed linux,but I found a aic7xxx_old driver, for I used a DELL PowerEdge 2600 with the lastest 320M scsi controller, and when I add a 2940UW scsi card in it, I found the added line "alias scsi1 aic7xxx" not work, I must modprobe aic7xxx, so I add one line to /etc/init.d/rc.local, is modprobe aic7xxx_old, I forgot to try it out in /etc/module.conf, ;-)
     maybe you can try aic7xxx_old.
