RPM manager? Source Code?

I'm thinking of installing the source code for the RPM manager onto my
smoothwall box. What I would like to do, is then install any apps I may need
using RPM's. Is this possible?. Okay, let me rephrase the question...

I want to install the RPM manager onto a system that doesn't normally use
RPM's. It's a minimal system, and doesn't have much on it, but it boots up.
I would then also like to use up2date, to install additional programs and
apps. Am I going in over my head here?
