LDAP

I would just like to get some sort of clarification of the purpose of LDAP.

It is my understading that LDAP is a publicly avalible address book. Is it
possible for me to be able to make contacts, only avalible to the person
that entered them? Using multiple OS's, and multiple machines is a
nightmare, which is simplified, with IMAP for email, but for contacts, there
is still the problem. It's all well and good using web based email, but some
of our machines are denied web access.

I guess my problem is my email contacts are not universally avalible, and I
want them to be, will LDAP solve my problem?
