RE: LDAP

Thanks for the response Rick, hmm.... I have OpenLDAP on my Redhat box, and
I understand that Outlook can utilise LDAP servers. What other uses could
LDAP have? I'm curious.

LDAP is a lightweight implementation of the older X.500 protocol. It
is essentially a front end for any number of different storage methods,
SQL, flat file, dbm, even shells

Can it be used as a phone book? Yes, but that's not all it's used for
Access can be highly restricted or wide open. You should be aware that
configuring LDAP can be tricky and time consuming. You really should
get a book on LDAP before making the leap

If you're using some web mail product, the odds are your address book
is currently either SQL or LDAP. Keep in mind that LDAP is merely a
protocol. You still need a way to "speak" to the LDAP server over TCP
port 389 (to perform searches, edits, adds and deletes). There are
libraries built into code for that, or you can use an intermediate
method--the most common is some web interface, but that's moot for you
