Actually, I think that it is not 2.2 <-> 2.4.
I had similar problems, but in my case, the RH7.1-kernel (2.4.2-2) ran
without problems.
(which is really weird).

Furthermore, knoppix also runs. I have tried the version which uses
kernel 2.4.19.
(even weirder, right?)

So it is something changed within the patches which causes the kernel
to crash completely during boot.
And something debian didn't change, but RH, Suse, and Mandrake did.
