Do you have any other operating systems on the drive? Did you actually see
the installer writing files to the HD? What error messages do you get? Is
the drive brand new? Did you partition it yourself? Is the drive set as
active? *The number of times, I've repartitioned a drive, and forgot to set
it active, is UNBELIEVABLE!*

I don't mean to ask so many questions, but these are questions I'd ask
myself in the same situation.

i have only 1 hard drive, using grub i think - as i say, new to this

I installed rh8 with the server option then chose to install everything. i
had the system automatically partitioned the drive

As for my system, pentium 3 1ghz, 20gb drive, 256mb ram, intel 810 graphics,
3com 3c920 netowrk, 810 controller chip and ac97 sound

Please remember that i am new to rh8 and the whole linux thing
