Did the machine eventually boot?

If it did, take a good look at yout init.d file, it may be corrupted.

If it didn't try rescue mode, mount the existing system as /mnt/sysimage
(see Bob's excellent post on how to do this a few days ago) and check
the file.

Another possible reason is that the filesystem is corrupted.
Run fsck with the automatic repair switched OFF to check out the file
system.  You may have to force a check with the -f option.  It may pay
to use -c to do a badblock check too.

Be cautious of running fsck with auto-repair on until you know what the
problem is ... it can do more harm than good on occassions.
