Hi - I spent the weekend installing a Server with RH8 to try and use Samba.
I have the linksys router with three computers on it.
I have the Internet running fine, but have not been successful at getting my
MS computer to see the RH box.
My router IP is 192.168.1.1 and my RH8 eth0 IP is 192.168.1.104. I started
Mozilla and it asked for my
Account information for my ISP. I copied it from the MS Outlook/Accounts
information and everything came up.
I did not change any of the default network settings.
Now if I could just figure out how to change the smb config file.
Hop this helps -

Tony,
I ran lokkit and set to no firewall. Again I tried to connect to the
internet via my router and cable modem with no success. I ran ifconfig
to check settings. Currently have inet addr:192.168.1.1
Bcast:192.168.1.255 and Mask:255.255.255.0. Is this correct? My router
ip address is 192.168.1.1 with submask of 255.255.255.0. The computers
on my net should have ip addresses of 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.254.
My other 4 windows computers have .100 through .103 assigned. This
computer should probably be .104. I thought with DHCP the router would
automatically assign the ip address. This works automatically in
windows. What am I doing wrong?
Randy

Your computer's IP address on the local network is 192.168.1.1.
This is the value you gave it with the ifconfig command
> ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0
> route add default gw 192.168.1.1
#ifconfig
will report this same informationback to you.
The error
> When I open the browser and try to access http://192.168.1.1 it comes
> back with "the connection was refused when attempting to connect
> 192.168.1.1".
sound like you are actually getting through to your computer via the
network, but that your computer either has a firewall installed and
configured to refuse http connections, or you aren't actually running
any web-server software.
Assuming you set the firewall on during the setup, run lokkit and set
the firewall to allow http services.

The firewall tool does not read your current configuration. It always
comes up prepared to give you "high" security. When you set
something, it is saved, but will not appear the next time you run the
tool.

If memory serves me, when you configure the firewall you can also
select which port numbers you want to allow through the firewall. I'm
not at an 8.0 system to verify all this, but I thought FTP was one of the
services you can click on to allow access to. If I remember correctly,
I had to enter the telnet port number by hand.
Your other option is to turn the firewall off (which leaves you open) or
configure the firewall by hand which is frankly a big pain in the butt to
cover all port numbers correctly. The steps for writing the firewall
rules is about as much fun as writing the grammar rules for a sendmail.cf
file by hand. ;)

Hi there!
I understand this topic more appropriately goes to the Sound-List, but my
mail
sent there has not got any reply. I see few messages to that list anyway...
I installed RH 8.0 on an old Dell OptiPlex GX1 (PII 400, 256MB RAM, 30GB
hard
disk, etc) and it installed and works very well. There is only one thing
that is not working: the sound!
The sound card was detected in Windows XP as Aureal Vortex 8820 Audio.
Anybody can point me to a place where I can download the driver(s)?
Thanks a lot and wish everybody a Happy 2003!

I have a question on how best to create the CD disks from the downloaded
images.
* I downloaded the 3 iso images from the web site and checked their
checksums locally (good).
* I downloaded and installed BlindWrite CD burning software onto my
WinXP system and burned the CDs into 700MB CD-R disks.
* I did a test boot with the first disk and the installation started,
however, it reported that the disks "FAILED" their check and should not
be used.
Can someone give me any insight as to what the boot time check is
verifying? Any suggestions on how best to get good disks created,
including paying the $$$ to have the pre-built for me:)
thanks

Hello All
Well I am sad to write this from a win98 machine bcaz
of stupid command -> "dd if=111.bin of=/dev/hda2 bs=1440 count=1"
from root on RH 7.1
Actually /dev/hda2 was where / got mounted everytime..but now this
command has caused inode table to get corrupted on /dev/hda2
(may be bcaz i replaced usual bs=512 to bs=1440 and so its written to
unwanted space cauing damage to i-node tables)..
now i can't go beyond kernel panic screen on RH 7.1
So Can i get back my data in /dev/hda2 ???How?
Pls mail me personally and forward this to known Sys Admins
(this time not going to crosspost..:) )
bye thnx

I can not find any way of configuring these two components on my HP
Visualize Dual Xeon machine.
Does anyone have any idea where I can find a driver for these?
Secondly, I'm setting up a server in to play with (HP E-800). RH 8.0
loaded fine, but when I
started loading *.tiff files in the individual home folders, the hard
drive when into perpetual
read/write. I ended up logging off, but it distroyed my XFS and I could
not get back into the GUI
X system, everything became text mode after that.
Any help on either issue would be appreciated.

If it looks like a firewall problem, go and download firestarter from
sourceforge and install it, then turn off lokkit and run firestarter.
It has a reasonable wizard to configure it, and a GUI to set host and
port options on-the-fly.
