i've had red hat running first on an inspiron 7500 and, currently, on an
8100:

  1600x1200 display, 32M nvidia geforce2go
  combo DVD/CDRW
  xircom combo nic/modem card

everything works fine here.  i don't think you're going to get a better
value than dell laptops.  thinkpads are just as nice, but they were way
pricier for the equivalent configuration.
