    I personally don't know how Linux's firewall package works, but in
general practice a hardware firewall alone will not provide you full
security since most of them stop "intruders" from coming in but do nothing
about them sending out information once they are in ( this is simplified of
course ).  For better security you normally need to add a software firewall,
and for extra security you may need authentication and encryption.
    After I installed a software firewall in one of my Windows machines I
realized how many apps were trying to reach the net without me even knowing
before, some of them were OK ( e.g. browsers, emails, etc ) but others were
odd.  Well, anyways I hope this helps a little to answer your question,
since I'm a little new to Linux myself I would ask for somebody else's
opinion.
