It is true that MSN does have special AO(hel)L like software, on broadband
it merely provides access to "special" content on their network. They do in
fact give you a direct connection to the internet. If it in the unlikely
event that it is the way the network is setup that is causing the problems I
would recommend looking in to a hardware firewall with built in routing.
These I know can be bought for $80 or less from D-Link, and then you're not
only a lot more secure, you also don't have to dedicate an entire computer
to the role of sharing the internet connection, and it would be less likely
to crash and take the network with it then a Windows box would.

Aside from the troubles with the NIC, msn [sic] is an AOL-like service,
requiring
*their* software to access the internet in a way they think you should.
To my knowledge, they don't provide you with a simple connection to the
internet.
I avoided the forced switch from qwest to msn by telling them I wasn't using
Winduhs.
Bottom line--msn doesn't have a Linux client, so talk to your folks
about going for a straight broadband connection with another ISP.
