no sound with cdrom

i have a soundblasterlive! value card,and cannot get any sound when 
playing cd's.
i get the startup audio on kde and get notifications,and when i try the 
"setup"command ,i can hear the audio clip.in the soundserver,i have 
autodetect selected.i don't have a selection for alsa .in the control 
panel under, hardware info ,the soundcard is listed under i/o ports, but 
there is no soundcard detected when selecting, sound. i'm new to 
linux,so any help would be appreciated, steve
