AFAIK, the version numbers are the same, just the newer ones were derived
from the source code rather than pre-compiled binaries... Therein lies the
problem.

I've never used the --rebuild or --recompile options before, but
the docs say they do the equivalent of a "make install". This doesn't
mean that the RPM database has been updated, unless that's part of the
Makefile's install clause or the source RPM's %install clause.
If you do an "rpm -qa | grep foo", what version is reported? The new
one?
