This is LINUX!!! No need to reboot unless changing hardware and/or
kernel, or if some (rare) sign of instability crops up.
Making available a tape drive that's already installed doesn't require a
reboot. Usually, at most, logout and back in. At worst (barring any of
the above items mentioned), go to runlevel 1 and back to runlevel 3.
But, reboot?
