Based solely on what I read here, I'm assuming they don't already have a
.config or there'd be no need for the question. Unless, of course, they
made a bunch of mistakes in a compile and they wanted the original
configuration to start over with. At which time the existing .config
would be useless and they'd not lose anything by getting one from a
clean source tree.

If they don't have the source installed, they can easily get it. If they
are planning to rebuild the kernel, they'll need it anyway. If they just
want to study it, installing anything from the CD would suffice.

I answered based on those assumptions since there wasn't anything to
point in a different direction. If those weren't the intent, maybe more
information would be helpful so a more helpful reply can be offered.
Also, if none of those are what the request was for I'll end up being
ignored anyway. Or told it was about something else.
