awk: the initials of the authors of the language, Aho, Weinberger, and
Kernighan (yes, Brian K. of "K&R", the definers of C).

grep: Get Regular Expression and Print (I think).

There's also du = disk usage, less (less is better than "more", or
"pg" (pager), for that matter), vi = VIsual editor <cough>, emacs =
Editor MACroS (thermo-nuclear word processor and development
environment), tar = Tape ARchiver, ln = LiNk.
