Just to let you know my installation has now, finally, worked.

Many thanks for your persistent help, I really appreciate it. This
correspondence has been my re-introduction to the Linux community after 5
*long* years, in Windows exile, and it is lovely to see that it is still a
friendly and welcoming place.
