I did it - I blew away IPCHAINS just to see what would happen - there
were two programs that had dependencies on IPCHAINS being there -
lokkit and firewall config. It seems to be working OK but I ran out
of time to play with it much.

Anyone know why lokkit and firewall config would use chains - I
believe these are new programs that came out with the 7.2 version.

Those were actually there before that. I'm thinking 7.0, though I can't remember exactly. They're definitely in 7.1 because I have it installed and have both (and use neither now that I have an external firewall). I'm guessing that they depend on ipchains because they were written to use it. I doubt either can do iptables, though I could be mistaken. If ipchains is uninstalled, they're useless. Another tool would be more useful, say Bastille or something similar.

I vote for Firestarter, provided you're running X and have GTK. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, SSE, VitalStream, Inc. rstevens vitalstream com - - 949-743-2010 (Voice) http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - To err is human, to moo bovine. - ----------------------------------------------------------------------
