Kernel update / NVIDIA / Catch-22?

All,

I tried to update my 2.4.2 kernel to the latest but
there is a dependency conflict with my nvidia graphics
card.

There is a graphics driver for the updated kernel but
I'm guessing I need to update the kernel before the
driver otherwise they'll be a dependency conflict in
the other direction.

This seems like a catch-22.

Has anyone overcome this problem?
