Yes, your kernel is out of date but the situation isn't as bad as you
think (if I understand it). First, turn off X Windows by setting
/etc/inittab to level 3, not level 5. Boot into Linux and use the command
line to use either the Redhat Network to upgrade your kernel or download
the latest kernel version which is 2.4.9-31.
Reinstall and boot from this kernel. Still using the command line
interface (and remember that you get several of these with ALT-F1,2,3,...)
use Lynx to go to Nvidia's page or FTP to FTP the latest drivers. You'll
need the kernel driver and the GLX driver. Make sure that the driver you
download matches the kernel level and the distribution level. For
example, kernel 2.4.9-31, uniprocessor, Redhat 7.1.
Download these drivers, install the kernel driver first then the GLX
module. Use Xconfigurator to set up X Windows with --preferxf4 and then
edit the XF86Config-4 file to use the "nvidia" driver not "nv". Comment
out GLOpen and DRI (better read the instructions, I'm not sure these are
the ones to comment out) and do "startx". You should get an Nvidia splash
panel and you're off and running.
