I agree. MANY systems don't have the wealth of scripts that Linux does, and some may have stuff combined that you don't want to play with. Generally speaking, when I use something like "edit /etc/xinetd.d/ftp" or "send a SIGHUP to syslogd", I say that because it'll work on ANY system--not just those with nice scripts like Linux.

The same is true when I give out a script.  It's in Bourne shell
(not even bash), because it's the only shell guaranteed to exist on
every Unix system.  Sure, some could be written more easily in csh
or ksh or tsh, but Bourne is the lowest common denominator.
