I've seen this problem. I had two identical machines, and I tried on one
machine--got that same error while installing packages. Tried on the
other, no error. I tried a few times on the first, and I finally got it
to install--but then it wouldn't boot correctly. Turns out it was the
hard drive. Dunno if that helps, but good luck.
