I don't really have an answer. I only used linux on one laptop a long
time ago (RH4.2 to be exact). I don't take too kindly to laptops myself,
so I don't spend too much time looking into specs to see what will/won't
work. But, maybe there's another way that will give you a fallback
position.

Not sure if this is feasible. But what about installing another drive
and putting it all together on that? Then if you have problems, you can
always switch the drive back and continue on as you've been doing. Plus,
if it mostly works but has an issue or two, you can change the linux
drive out to do business and switch it back in to see about fixing
whatever problems still exist.
