Re: modem? Pre-installation sanity check RH7.2 on Toshiba Tecra 8100

Colin,

I think that only if you find someone who can say "I have exactly that computer with the same setup and there are no problems" can you feel certain. The lack of such a reply probably indicates nobody is certain (have not used that computer setup?). Have you checked on the hardware compatibility list on the RedHat site?

I think the advice of trying the installation on another hard disk suggested by someone else is a good one. Alternatively, as you have a large hard disk, make some space on it available for linux (backing up first) and install linux initially on part of the existing drive.

Its the cautious approach I would use.

Well, to quote my own initial distressed and curious ramblings;

The nice thing is that the modem has never been used, and likely never
will be either. I'm lucky in that I live and work in network worlds
(ADSL at home, a T1 at the office and similar broadband connectivity at
branch locations)

However, other than that one "gotcha" do you think there is any
likelihood of install glitches happening?

Karl, can you weigh in on this thread and give me the benefit of your
considerable knowledge?

As I said initially, I *must* be sure about this. If the laptop is out
of service I am seriously screwed. [Repeated apology for the
ultra-cautious approach et al]

Kind Regards to all,
-Colin
