I am having a problem getting Redhat 7.3 installed on my system. To date I
have tried to following
5 CDROM Drives (one brand new)
Downloaded ISOs from just about everywhere
3 different hard disks
3 different systems
What happens is that the install process makes it all the way to the point
where is starts copying files. It starts copying and will just stop. No
error messages. And the point at which it stops is different everytime. I
also can look at the virtual consoles and see no error messages indicating
any error. I get the same results when running in text mode or graphical.
I also checked the CD's using the "linux mediacheck" and all of the CDs I
have made to date PASS.
Now I can turn around and install Redhat 7.2 on the same machine in 20
minutes without any problems.
I've had a similar problem on some motherboard and Adaptec 2100 RAID
controller combinations (I can't recall if the motherboards are ASUS,
Tyan or Intel) on both 7.2 and 7.3. I've also heard of other folk
with similar problems with different hardware, so it's not unique to
our combo. The solution was to install using ext2 filesystems. Once
the system was up, we converted them to ext3 and all has been well.
I suspect that there's some weird race condition in the install
kernel and the ext3 module.
Granted that this is a long shot, but give it a whirl.
