Ok, anyway I thought that the typical unix guru was a bearded fearsome
looking individual who used 4 letter expletives regularly during his work
hours, at least the ones whom I have met have all confirmed to this
pattern (minus the beard occasionally), so I assumed that such lguage is
accepted.

What sort of age period are you talking here, I have a OLD OLD OLD cretive
drive 4x from 1995 and it still can read rewritables, and cd-r's off
almost all the colors that have been there since 95, the gold, then the
green, the blue, the purple, the silver etc etc.....
I still persist that if the drive cant read certain cd-r's and it is old
then you can try to clean the laser and see, but dont clean the laser of
cd-writers as you cant do this in many writers.....
