Yes but as a guy from SE asia I know why they were invented and it had
nothing to do with windoze, you see the hardware market is so competitive
here, that everyone is trying to push the prices of hardware down, and
what better way to do it than to transfer some of the modem hardware
dependeant work on to the CPU and save a chip or two. So that means that
the modem has to be able to commnicate with the processing that is done by
the OS, in other words the driver as written for the most popular os which
is windows.

The good news is that certain chipsets like the lucent are supported for
linux , and are used commonly.
