The method described in the reiserfs link for converting / to reiserfs
should work, its basically copy to another patition, and make the FS you
want and copyback the data, you will have to change the fstab and
lilo.conf entries.
But before converting your root fs, I think you can play about with the
new file systems on other paritions and see how you find them.
