Oops, forgot to answer this, its stolen from the ext3 mini howto
<http://www.symonds.net/~rajesh/howto/ext3/toc.html>, most is not relevant
like for example patching your kernel as redhat by default has support for
ext3.
1.2 Converting ext2 filesystems
An ext2 filesystem maybe converted to ext3 by creating a journal file
on it. To do this, run
tune2fs -j /dev/hdXX
on the target filesystem. The filesystem is now ext3!
Note that the filesystem need not be unmounted for this operation.
grendel: But you will have to unmount and remount it with the type
specified as ext3, ie -t ext3 .
