Problem "Bringing up loopback interface"

I have a Sony Vaio NV105 Laptop (P4m) it happly runs Suse 8, RH 7.X and mandrake 9.  After installing RH 8 (no problems/errors reported) and initialising the first system reboot it hangs when trying to call this function "Bringing up loopback interface".  Any ideas on how to sort this?
I cant get into the system at all, i have to ctrl-alt-del to restart.  I also left it for about 20 mins to see if it would start but it would not.

Any help appreciated....
