Installation freezes at first boot

Hello all,

Hope someone can help!

I am completely new to Linux / Red Hat, but decided to take the plunge and installed Red Hat 8.0 on my Sharp Laptop yesterday.

It all went ok, until the first boot.

Firstly, I didn't get the option of which OS to boot (I installed it alongside Windows XP). I opted for GRUB, and installed it to the 1st sector of the boot partition (As Partition Magic recommended - should this have been to the MFT??)

So I booted with the boot floppy I made during the installation.

I get to the enter username / password screens and that is fine, but a few seconds after the Red Hat screen, which appears shortly after, the hard disk stops thrashing and the computer freezes. I left it for 30 minutes, just in case it was working!

I am running at 1024 x 768 screen resolution, which was tested during the installation and worked fine.

I managed to get a bash prompt by selecting 'safe and sure' from the 'System' menu at login - but don't know what I am doing (I was mucking about and 'pinged' localhost - but couldn't get it to stop!).

I wanted to try a different resolution, and read about xconfigurator, but don't know how to run it (it didn't work from the bash prompt.

Any help, much welcomed.

Many thanks,

Andrew Davies
