Hi,
You should install the boot loader to the MBR of the disk, not the 1st
Sector.
The sector install is if you are using a loader other than LILO or GRUB.
You can boot with the emergency floppy and reconfigure GRUB and rewrite it
to the MBR, or just reinstall again.
I've only used LILO, so I don't know the details of re-writing GRUB to the
MBR.

Subject: Installation freezes at first boot
Hello all,
Hope someone can help!
I am completely new to Linux / Red Hat, but decided to take the plunge and
installed Red Hat 8.0 on my Sharp Laptop yesterday.
It all went ok, until the first boot.
Firstly, I didn't get the option of which OS to boot (I installed it
alongside Windows XP). I opted for GRUB, and installed it to the 1st sector
of the boot partition (As Partition Magic recommended - should this have
been to the MFT??)
So I booted with the boot floppy I made during the installation.
I get to the enter username / password screens and that is fine, but a few
seconds after the Red Hat screen, which appears shortly after, the hard disk
stops thrashing and the computer freezes. I left it for 30 minutes, just in
case it was working!
I am running at 1024 x 768 screen resolution, which was tested during the
installation and worked fine.
I managed to get a bash prompt by selecting 'safe and sure' from the
'System' menu at login - but don't know what I am doing (I was mucking about
and 'pinged' localhost - but couldn't get it to stop!).
I wanted to try a different resolution, and read about xconfigurator, but
don't know how to run it (it didn't work from the bash prompt.
Any help, much welcomed.
Many thanks,
Andrew Davies
