No Sound after install

Hi all,

I have taken the first step into the Linux world and installed Redhat
8.0 on my system.  Unfortunately there is no sound.

Under Sound Card Configuration I have the following info (all correct):

Vendor: Aureal Semiconductor
Model: Vortex
Module: Unknown

When I try and access the volume control (gnome-volume-control) I get
the following message:

I was not able to open your audio device.
Please check that you have permission to open /dev/mixer and please make
sure you have sound support compiled into your kernel.

What should I do next? Sorry in advance if this is the wrong list,
please point me in the right direction it it is,
