Cant log out of X

Aye guys
For a while now, i havent been able to exit X without a kernel panic. I
dont think its the manager, its been occuring with both blackbox and
gnome. every once in a while ill be able to fire up a new shell and
kill the x server successfully, but  9 times out of 10 if i log out , i
crash. Anyone have any ideas?
sorry i dont have any kernel messages, i can post them afterwards if
anyone needs them
